I have been surrounded by athletes my whole life. My one brother became involved in car racing after a serious accident ruined his chances of playing football in college and my youngest brother reached his dream of playing in the NFL. Needless to say, I grew up with brothers who pushed hard everyday. Although I was not an athlete growing up I always knew I had it in me to do the same I just needed to find a way to bring it out!
I started my CrossFit training about three years ago in my basement; aka “the dungeon”. And yes, that dungeon felt like a torture chamber at times, actually MOST OF THE TIME!! At the very same time I began training, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Working out became therapeutic to me, a way of releasing the stress associated with caring for someone with cancer. Many times, I would train and go right to chemo treatments with my mom. We would sit there for five hours together and, I swear, even though those workouts in the dungeon felt like they sucked the life out of me…I knew my short struggle was nothing compared to what she was going through on a daily basis…. so I pushed even harder! It was in the dungeon that I realized the true meaning of intensity. I believe intensity is not something you can truly appreciate until you are faced with something in your life that threatens to change the course of your determined path. I believe it is at this moment, the moment you choose to push through, no matter how scary it may seem or how uncomfortable you feel that life begins to change!!Brazen is an environment where we can all realize the purpose of an intensely driven life. While it is so difficult to actually find the right words to describe this purpose…all of us that have collapsed to the floor after a WOD knows exactly the emotions I am describing!! The most comforting fact of all is that while we may all be pushing through that pain for different reasons, we are never pushing alone!
